Modern Methods of Construction: A not-so-modern term?

Published date: 15 May 2017

Modern methods of construction (MMC) are slowly making it into the UK’s dialect when talking about housebuilding, although it certainly isn’t a new concept. Since the Second World War, the UK saw a rapid demand for new housing to be delivered quickly. It was during this time new techniques and products were introduced into the building industry with MMC seeing staggering evolution and investment.

Today MMC is undoubtedly gaining momentum as it promotes efficiency, quality and sustainability which appeal to developers requiring a cheaper method of construction and politicians looking for a quick way to fix to Britain’s housing crisis. And while residential property may only just be starting to take MMC seriously, hotels, offices and student accommodation have demonstrated it can and does work.

At FMB Insurance we have dealt with an array of MMC including durisol blocks, sedum roofs, polystyrene formwork, structural insulated panels (SIPS), and reclaimed blockwork formed on site. We understand that the MMC supply chain in the UK is growing, with this in mind FMB New Homes structural warranty is accepting of developers who work with a range of construction materials, components, assemblies and systems.
